The u-Care project were delighted to be involved in two successful engagement activities during the Edinburgh Science Festival this year.

The first activity was an engaging children’s workshop on UV light including what UV light is and how it works, how and why different animals and plants react to UV light, and how we can protect ourselves against UV light. From colour-changing beads to sunscreen experiments, it was a joy to see science spark so much excitement and creativity.

Bright Ideas in Medicine was a panel discussion bringing together researchers, clinicians, and innovators to talk about how we got to where we are today with using light in medicine, the future of healthcare, and the importance of collaboration between disciplines — and the audience brought some great questions too.

The expert panel consisted of:
Robert Thomson – Chair of Photonics, Heriot-Watt University
Ewan Eadie – Clinical Scientist and Head of Scientific Services for Photobiology and Optical Radiation, NHS Tayside
Beth Mills – UKRI Future Leaders Fellow in Microbial Keratitis, University of Edinburgh
Ahsan Akram – Clinician Scientist at the University of Edinburgh and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, NHS Lothian
Michael Tanner – Associate Professor in Biomedical Photonics, Heriot-Watt University
